At an early age, Reverend Furness was interested in the Bible and knowing more about God. This was reveal when given the choice to do activities in both Church and School. His God fearing Mother saw this hunger for knowledge of God and nurtured him as he started his Christian Journey. He was born and raised in the small town of Mullins South Carolina and he received his early education in the Marion County Public School System. His degrees in education undergraduate and graduate did not compare to the vast knowledge he received in biblical studies at home, Allen University, Dickerson Theological Seminary and L.B. Burgess Theological Extension School in 1987.
Reverend Furness was admitted to the Northeast Conference in 1984. He received his Deacon Ordination in 1986 and Iterant Ordination in 1988. His first Pastoral Appointment was to Mount Pisgah AMEC, Bayboro, S.C. Other Appointments included: St. Stephens AMEC, Loris, S.C.; Mt. Zion AME, Burgess S.C.; Williams Chapel AMEC; Nichols, S.C. Little River Circuit which include St. Paul AME and Mt. Zion AME of Little River; St. John AME, Kingstree; Popular AME of Longs, S.C. and in November 2011 he was appointed to the pastoral charge of St. John AME Marion where he currently Pastor. While at St. John AME he Reverend Furness have reorganized the Music Department, began a Young Adult Ministry, and reorganized the Church School, reorganized bible Study, purchase computers, reorganized the stewardship and finance Commission, Computerize Church Finance, Renovated the Pastors study, Began a Radio Ministry, added a Computer Clerk, Restored (renovated) the church sanctuary, remodeled elevator entrance, repaired roof on educational building, installed gutters around sanctuary, and increase the church membership.
Presently he serve as Marion District Dean of Christian Education, Marion Finance Committee, Marion District Executive Committee, NEC Trustee, NEC Finance Committee, and Board of Pastoral Efficiency.
Rev Furness has consistently had a vision love of unity for the church and says that St. John is a Church where Love is contagious.
As an educator, he taught in the school Districts of Mullins, Dillon, Hampton County North District School and Mullins School District Two. Reverend Furness 30 years of teaching experience included teaching Mathematics, Social Studies, Physical Education, Science and Language Arts. He retired in 2000.
Rev. Furness is married to the former Shirley Gore. They have three children: Matthew Jr., of Seattle, Washington, B. Christopher of Columbia, SC and Kendrick of the home and Grandson Matthew Furness II.
